Luteal phase support in assisted reproductive technologies: from here to there
Luteal phase support (LPS) is warranted in ART because the normal physiological support of the corpus luteum—the pulsatile secretion of LH by the anterior pituitary—is disrupted during controlled ovarian stimulation (COS). Following this purported mechanism, LPS should be offered starting when the efficacy of hCG on the corpus luteum vanishes until luteal support is taken over by hCG of embryonic origin. HCG of urinary or recombinant origin has pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics characteristics that foster prolonged efficacy on the corpus luteum present.
