Success rates in assisted reproduction have enjoyed a steady rise in the past several decades. Much of this success can be attributed to the progressive improvements in embryology laboratory techniques and embryo selection, including extended embryo culture and preimplantation genetic screening among other techniques. However, it is clear that clinical techniques related to ovarian stimulation and oocyte retrieval, which influence the number and quality of gametes, and the embryo transfer procedure, which replaces those carefully cultured and selected embryos, play important roles.
